Book Review - Elvis Has Not Left the Building
I've always been a fan of Elvis. I can't name all of his songs, and I don't have any Elvis CDs, but there's just something so invigorating about his music. I stumbled upon this book by accident, (it might have been OzBargain, I don't remember), but it sounded like a great combination.
The gist of the plot is that Elvis faked his own death, and due to people stealing the money he had put aside to live, and his overall boredom and desire to do the right thing, he becomes a private investigator. One who specialises in missing people.
The novel is paced really well, it's a good mix of story progression and character development. I can imagine Elvis as a gritty old PI, with his Southern charm and hips that don't move like they used to. Like a typical PI, he has some things in his past that he has to live with - breaking his daughter's heart with his fake death, guilt over his twin's death - who apparently died in childbirth (I never knew about this). But unlike your typical PI, he isn't full of cynicism.
I got through the book pretty quickly. It wasn't one of those books you can't put down, but it was some lighthearted fun that made me feel compelled to read it whenever I could.
If you like Elvis, and you like light mysteries, I'd recommend this book. Or if you are a fan of the Stephanie Plum novels.
