World Chocolate Day

Today is World Chocolate Day and marks 467 years since chocolate was first introduced to Europe!

It was quite kind of Haigh's Chocolates to give away free chocolate frogs today: milk, dark, milk peppermint and dark peppermint. Jal, D and I went to get some. D and I both got dark (I got it for MrFodder), and Jal picked milk. I realised this is an insidious way to learn people's chocolate preferences.

D said he had never heard of Haigh's Chocolates before, and I was pretty surprised, as it's a pretty famous Australian chocolate store, and MrFodder and I visited their store in Adelaide. It was opened on the 1st of May, 1915, making chocolate-covered fruit centres. The grandson of the owner went to Switzerland to train with Lindt and Sprungli, learned about production in the US and changed the manufacturing process.

I don't know what the deal is with the chocolate frogs, but it seems to be an iconic thing. I bought some for a friend who was visiting Australia, and when I buy chocolate from Haigh's to give as a gift, I usually pick the frogs. According to their page, it's because they support a number of research projects to protect Australia's frog species.

There's a bit of chocolate trivia for you for World Chocolate Day!
